The Importance of Being Earnest is a comedic play by Oscar Wilde.

Set in Victorian England, it revolves around two young men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who both use the alias “Ernest” to escape social obligations and pursue romantic interests.

The play is renowned for its witty dialogue, satirical take on Victorian society, and humorous examination of identity, love, and marriage.

Through a series of misunderstandings and comedic situations, Wilde explores the absurdities of maintaining a double life and the importance of being earnest—in both senses of the word.
