Along with the sentiment in the lyrics there are many thank you’s attached to this number one hit which also won numerous awards including an Academy Award for “Best Original Song”, a Golden Globe Award for “Best Original Song”, and a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
Many of those thanks go producer Jimmy Lenner. It was Lenner that talked struggling songwriter Johnny Previte to sign on to write music for a little know film production called “Dirty Dancing”.
When it was decided the song was a duet it was Lenner that was charge with finding some A listers to perform it. He was originally set on Donna Summer as the female voice but she turned it down nervous about the films suggestive title. For the male voice he went to Bill Medley, one half of the legendary Righteous Brothers but he too turned it down.
Thanks to Lenners persistence and securing Jennifer Warnes, Medley eventually agreed.
