The name Mark Knopfler is synonymous as the leader of the band Dire Straits however the band was initial formed by Marks older brother David.

It was guitarist David Knopfler who introduced Mark , to his bassist flatmate John Illsley after already securing drummer Pick Withers, the four founded the rock band Dire Straits.

David played rhythm guitar beside his brother, who was lead guitarist in the band. He appeared on Dire Straits’ first two albums but the stress of composing, arranging songs, recording albums, and tours to support them took its toll on the brothers. David left the band during the recording of their third album. After quitting the band, he embarked upon a solo career.
