Although the rest of the song was inspired by the death of Stevie Nicks uncle and the death of John Lennon both in December of 1980, the tile came from a song Nicks was originally intended to write about Tom Petty and his first wife Jane.
Nicks says that when she asked about the couple’s first meeting. Jane said they met “at the age of seventeen”, but her strong Southern accent made it sound like “edge of seventeen” to Nicks.
The sound of the misheard phrase was pleasing enough to Nicks that she told Jane she would write a song for it and give her credit for the inspiration.
