Thornbury Community Theatre proudly presents its second production of their 33rd Season, The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard.
This brilliant spoof of an Agatha Christie-esque parlour room whodunit is a clever lampoon, sharply in focus and astute in its own critical assault. The Real Inspector Hound is a play-within-a-play, about reality, fantasy and theatre, and how dangerous it can be to confuse them.
Drawing on Stoppard’s personal experiences as a Bristol theatre critic, who growing tired of critiquing plays, began to write them. Hound was written in 1960, in a time when values were beginning to change. The society of the time had grown weary of Christie’s comfortable crimes that were inevitably solved, and were beginning to realize that they did not occur quite as formulaically as often portrayed in golden age films. This is one societal influence that had a huge bearing on the way in which Stoppard constructed the play, as a tongue-in-cheek parody that laughs at the cozy conventions of earlier crime fiction texts.
Thornbury Community Theatres’ latest production features a powerful cast of local talents: Jack Gaughan (Moon), Jake McArthur (Birdboot), Serena Pockaj (Mrs. Drudge), Andy Dumas (Simon Gascoygne), Robyn Hughes (Felicity Cunningham), Tara Kivlichan (Cynthia Muldoon) and John Knox (Magnus Muldoon). With lighting design by Rick Muzar, sound design by Tom Mullins (Studio Volume), directed by Heidi Hawkins and produced by Annette Sandberg.
TCT will also be presenting, The Pepperlene Soap Company Mystery Hour Presents: A Love Unbecoming – a 30-minute one-act old-time radio show by playwright Dan Jeannotte. Starring Jeff Wilson (Announcer), Barbara Lyne Wilson (Actress), and Andy Dumas (Actor).
